The Band

Box of Birds is a Boston-based indie/folk band led by Steph Durwin. It is sometimes moody, sometimes driving and melodic, but always lyrically conscious. Steph and Charlie Gargano (vocals/guitar) met while studying audio engineering at The New England Institute of Art in Brookline, MA. After jamming and experimenting in the studios, they began writing songs together, and started playing for their college friends in the attic of The Murdock Manor, a DIY concert space in Boston, MA. Since then, the two have written three EPs (two will be released over the coming year), and have played countless shows across New England. From 2013-2017, the band played as a four-piece with drum/mandolin/dulcimer player, Benny Grotto, and bass player, Erik Caldarone. Now the two are back to their roots as a duo, writing, performing, and transforming as the two grow as players.

Their first EP, “A Place On The Wall Where A Picture Used To Hang” was released in 2015.

In 2018 the band released two EPs "Go Away Ghost" and "Come Out Clean", available now everywhere you stream music.

"From the very beginning, as shown in the washed-out guitar atmosphere that opens “Fill In The Blanks,” the band is comfortable switching between genres and embracing sounds that other folk-rockers might dismiss as uncool (take the extended melodica solo on "The Aging Mold"”, for example). These musical choices make the duo even more likable, suggesting that while they’re talented musicians, they don’t take themselves overly seriously."

" 'It's Fine, It's Swell' tells the tales of being home and rediscovering what home really means, but does it with a fairly fitting country-western twang. The song builds to an Opry-esque climax, with a really classy taste of organ (care of Chris “Gooch” Bloniarz from local folk powerhouses Grey Season and Honeysuckle) and harmonies mixed into the swelling sounds. Singer Steph Durwin’s voice is honest and raw, making the tune an instant classic, something that fits in around a campfire and in a packed concert hall with the crowd singing along."

"For Box of Birds, things are fine, things are swell. The group is starting to find their wings.

Just don’t ask them how many official state birds they can name without Googling."
